The premier independent living retirement community in Asheville, North Carolina
Independent Living Choices That Suit Your Lifestyle
Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community was established in 1955 with a generous donation of thirty acres of farmland just south of downtown Asheville. Today, Deerfield is a full-service retirement community on 125-acres minutes from the famous Biltmore Estate and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Red roofs, stucco and stonework define the look of Deerfield, while tree-shaded lanes bordered with azaleas and rhododendron meander through the walkable community. Our location in the Western North Carolina mountains near Asheville is one of the most desirable retirement locations in the country. The independent living lifestyle here offers outstanding variety with all of the recreational and cultural amenities of Asheville nearby.

Common features in our cottages include nine foot ceilings, wall-to-wall carpeting, numerous closets and storage areas, fully equipped kitchens, utility rooms, washer and dryer, bathrooms with tub and/or shower and vanities, emergency call system with 24-hour security and emergency health care assistance, fire and smoke detectors, individualized heating and air-conditioning systems for each residence, lever door handles, prewired cable, telephone outlets, and a patio or balcony.
Cluster homes, found in the St. Giles neighborhood, are separate residences with outside entrances clustered in one of three buildings. The cluster homes have been newly refurbished to complement the craftsman-style look of the newer Deerfield community and feature many of the same amenities as our cottages and villas.

A Community of Faith
Deerfield is blessed to be one of the few retirement communities in the nation that includes a free-standing chapel on its campus with a chaplain on staff – actually, two! Our chaplains are ordained clergy with special training in ministering to seniors, and are there to support and affirm our residents’ spiritual commitments. We are very proud of our innovative, state-of-the-art Health Care Chapel attached to our Health Care Center. Groundbreaking in its design and function, the “pew-less” chapel provides easy accessibility, and offers twice weekly religious services. Membership in the chapel is optional, and all are welcome to attend services should they choose to do so.
An Experienced and Caring Staff
Our outstanding Asheville staff is dedicated to creating a fulfilling lifestyle for all our residents from independent living to assisted living to skilled nursing. Deerfield's goal is to employ those who share our vision of caring and to provide them with the ongoing training and support necessary to enhance their professional skills. From one department to the next you will find a number of staff members who have worked here ten years or more - and even a few who have over twenty years of service through many changes to our Asheville community.
Deerfield’s Life Care concept offers its residents unique health care benefits, as well as significant financial advantages and security. The Life Care benefit assures the availability of long-term nursing care or assisted living in the Deerfield on-site Health Center at the same monthly rate as in an independent living apartment or cottage. The resident has to pay extra only for the additional two meals per day during their stay in any level of care in the Deerfield Health Center, and any ancillary health care services not included in the Monthly Fee.
